Perched between Pertuis and Lourmarin, Cadenet offers panoramic views of the Durance, the Luberon, the Sainte-Victoire and the Alpilles. Cadenet experienced in the first half of the nineteenth century prosperity based on the development of handicrafts. Many basketry workshops settled, working willow grown in the Durance valley.

ROUTE 1: Southern Village
1 Place du Tambour Arcola

Starting instead of Arcola Drum, which dates from the nineteenth century, from which a beam of streets.
In the center stands, since 1894, the statue of André Estienne, known as the "Little Drum Arcola."
That place was like first name instead of the cattle market because it was outside the walls and it was due to the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries the trade of small and large animals.

2 Rue Louis Blanc

At the bottom of the square, down the steps, one can observe in the rue Louis Blanc fountain called "chick pea" because its water would facilitate the cooking this vegetable. Nearby is one of the more visible defense towers dating from the sixteenth century.

3 Avenue Gambetta

In the Avenue Gambetta, towards Avignon, No. 41-43 is an old house of the Brothers. This house, rebuilt in the nineteenth century, served as a school in the nineteenth century and basketry workshop.

4 Rue Félicien David

Take the rue Félicien David (composer 1810-1876) past his birthplace at No. 11 and then continue to the ancient walls overlooking the Durance valley.

5 Place Carnot

Resume avenue Gambetta left to go to the Place Carnot. On this square is the fountain osier (called mossy fountain).Built under Napoleon III, it served the weavers of the district to soak wicker.

6 Rue Victor Hugo

Fit the Victor Hugo Street and admire the No. 41 with its classical façade and door knocker.

7 Place de l'Horloge is a belfry built in 1876.

8 Place July 14

Further down, instead of July 14 is the old market square. In the center is the fountain, characteristic of the nineteenth with its obelisk topped with a globe and the four dolphins spitting water.

Walking down the rue Victor Hugo, noted a corner oratory whose statue has long since disappeared.

To return to Arcola Drum Square, you go through the site of the old "Portal Sainte Anne", which was the main gate of the city, destroyed in the nineteenth century.

Height at the corner of rue Viala you can still see a frgment of the old ramparts of the wall.

9 Rue Kebler

Kléber down the street at the corner pharmacy to the wash house where was reconstructed a scene bugade (former laundry)

10 Place Mirabeau

Go to Arcola Drum Place Mirabeau through the site and notice the unusual plate "Non trotting" at the roundabout.


JOURNEY 2: northern town
1 Place du Tambour Arcola

Starting this square where a curious fountain left the bakery. The water comes out of a tiny lion's head to fall into a basin made enormous hands.

2 Rue Denfert-Rochereau

Follow the rue Denfert-Rochereau, a former street Salpetriere. The saltpeter harvested in damp cellars a significant amount of saltpeter for the manufacture of gunpowder. The production was abandoned in the late eighteenth century. This street follows outside the northern ramparts.
Longer instead of 4 September (or Town Hall Square). At the center of it there was once a fountain fed by a hand pump.

3 Rue Marceau

At left, go up the street to wash Marceau XIX century. In its lower part, the street runs along the inside walls of the East. Admire the entrance of a former convent of the seventeenth century.
Turn left on the rue Raspail then on the square down towards the rue Baudin. From the Middle Ages until the beginning of the modern era, it was inhabited by the Jewish community, and was closed by a door.

4 Street of the old Hospital

Continue Baudin Street and go up the street from the old Hospital where there was a hospital until 1775 used an archway connects what the two parts of the hospital.

5 Below the castle

Pass under the porch and turn left when you walk along the cliff safre and ancient cliff dwellings at the foot of the castle

6 New Street

Continue Baroque Street to the fountain at the foot of the Rue Neuve, where are cave dwellings from the early twentieth century. One way to mount to the castle site.

Retrace your steps and go down the street Ledru Rollin, right, (ex St Esprit and suburb of Heralds). Many old houses bordering the (revised in recent years)

Back on the place of Arcola drum up the stairs to the street Scale.
